Maritime Link noise

There have been some loud booms on the northside because of construction on the Maritime Link.

Crews are blasting to allow installation of a new transmission line that will meet the Maritime Link where it comes ashore in Point Aconi, according to the CBC.

Emera has been contacting people living within a 3 kilometre radius of the blasting to let them know it’s just part of the construction.  They’re about 80% complete on that phase.

A cable ship began laying the 170 kilometre long subsea cable itself last week across Cabot Strait.

NS election leaders report

The party leaders were busy on the first full day of the election campaign.

Premier Stephen McNeil says there’s no question that gravel rural roads in the province have been neglected and are due for an upgrade.  McNeil said his Liberals will spend millions on improving not only the 100 series highways but on gravel roads as well which will add about $10 million to the costs announced earlier.

Tory Leader Jamie Baillie focused on infrastructure saying a Conservative Government would create a $2 billion infrastructure fund to build hospitals and roads and expand rural internet, with Ottawa paying half that cost.

NDP Leader Gary Burrill was talking about building new primary care clinics and hiring more doctors, nurses and nurse practioners at a cost of $120 million.
