The heavy garbage pickup began yesterday in CBRM.

Solid Waste manager Francis Campbell told the Cape Breton Post streets will be visited only once to pick up the big items, so have it out at the cuyrb by 6:00am.  If you have any questions visit the CBRM website at cbrm.ns.ca or phone the waste management hotline at (902) 567-1337.

The new Southend Community Centre is open.

The old building on Hillview Street had to be torn down because of damage from the Thanksgiving Flood.  Now the new centre in the former Mira Road Elementary School on George Street is open and serving the community.

The Centre’s administrator Angie MacDonald told the CBC her group is leasing the building from the province and now they have access to a gym, large yard and playground for the kids.  They’re busy painting and sprucing up but some programs are now running.
