Meeting on Monday to Discuss Fate of Damaged Covered Bridge

A meeting will be held tomorrow to help decide the future of the Hammond River Number 2 Covered Bridge in Quispamisis. Local residents are invited to attend. Officials with the provincial transportation department will present options for the bridge, which remains closed after being damaged by an overweight excavator fell through the bridge deck. The province is considering whether the bridge should be replaced by a new bridge or if the century old bridge is worth repairing.

Child Poverty Growing in Cape Breton

The child poverty rate in Cape Breton is still bad…and a Canadian think tank says it’s getting a little worse. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says the rate is 32.8%…up a little from 32.4% in 2013. That compares to 22.5% for the province as a whole, which is the third worst in the country. It’s much worse at Eskasoni at 75.6%.
