Big bucks for a Nova Scotia teacher

A Nova Scotia native has won the biggest teaching prize in the world, a million dollars.

Maggie MacDonnell won a million dollars in the “Global Teacher Prize” in Dubai as the best teacher in the world.  MacDonnell won for her philosophy promoting hope and acts of kindness in Salluit, a remote community in northern Quebec.  MacDonnell established a fitness centre for youth and adults and ran a community kitchen, among other things.  She plans to set up youth programs with her prize.

Prime Minister Trudeau sent a videotaped message saying she had done extraordinary things in exceptional circumstances and has shown enormous heart, will; and imagination.

Ontario manhunt

Police are hunting for a 43 year old Ontario man believed to have killed his stepson.

Justin Kuijer is also wanted for attempted murder after a woman working at a bank in St Catharines was stabbed on Friday.  Police went to the home and found the 7 year old boy and rushed him to hospital, where he died Saturday.

Kuijer is considered armed and dangerous.
