A pilot project involving Veterans Affairs Canada and the Nova Scotia Mental Health Court is set to get underway. The Veterans Justice Outreach Initiative has a goal of better identifying, tracking and exploring alternatives to incarceration for veterans. A 2015 study by Correctional Service Canada found about 3% of those federally incarcerated were veterans.
