Whitney Pier rink

Looks as if the Whitney Pier rink will remain open.

The rink has been there for 50 years and needs some work. It’s been losing teams to the new rink at Membertou.

Kim Sheppard, on the board of directors; said a committee has been put in place to try to keep the facility open.  Sheppard told the Cape Breton Post it’s more than just a skating rink, it’s important to the community.  The addition of a gentleman’s hockey league will help and they are planning fundraisijhng events such as parties, dances and flea markets.  CBRM and the province are also providing some funding.

Vaccination reminder

Health officials across Canada are reminding people to make sure their vaccinations are up to date.  That’s because of an outbreak of 7 cases of measles and three of mumps just since the beginning of the year in the Halifax area.

The medical health officer for the region says most of the patients had not been fully immunized.  While most children are vaccinated against the diseases when they are young, people should get a booster shot in their twenties or early thirties.
