Glace Bay incident

A standoff in Glace Bay ended peacefully yesterday afternoon.

Two police officers were near the old Big Cheese Pizza restaurant on Brookside Street when they spotted a Donkin man who had outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court.  They approached him and he ran into an apartment above the restaurant.  He barricaded himself inside, saying he had a gun.

The Emergency Response Team contianed the area and they talked him into giving up peacefully about an hour later.  Police say there was no weapon, and charges are pending against a 29 year old man.

BC fire update

Some evacuees are being allowed back into their homes in British Columbia but 19,000 are still under orders to stay away.

An estimated 377,000 hectares of land has been scorched by the wildfires but damage to homes and businesses remains unclear.

Fire officials are warning people to be prepared to leave home again quickly, because the worst fires typically occur at the end of July.
