Justice McLachlin steps down

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada is retiring.  Beverley McLachlin will step down in mid-December as the first female chief justice, and the longest serving.

Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould says McLachlin should be celebrated for helping to frame Canada’s justice system.  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says her judicial accomplishments are unparalleled.

NATO request

The Trudeau government is considering a NATO request to send police trainers to Afghanistan.

Defence Minister Harjhit Sajjan says Canada’s military focus however remains on Iraq and the fight against the Islamic terrorist group ISIS.  Sajjan was speaking in Halifax after a news conference highlighting the Defence Department’s new 10-year defence policy.
