Cape Breton decision overturned

The province’s Court of Appeal has overturned a Cape Breton’s man’s conviction on sex offences.

The justices ruled numerous technical problems with video link testimony by witnesses impaired the man’s right to a fair trial.

They overturned his conviction in May last year for sexual touching of his son who was 7 at the time.  The man’s name has not been released to protect the identity of his son.  The 43 year old man no longer lives in Cape Breton and is believed to have been paroled.

Sears woes

Industry experts are calling it part of the demise of the department store.

Sears Canada is closing 59 stores and slashing 29-hundred jobs under a court-supervised restructuring plan.

One marketing strategist says many department stores lost touch and stopped responding to the needs of the consumer many years ago.

Sears has seen its stock nosedive despite efforts to refashion itself at a time when more people are opting to shop online.

Sears locations in Halifax, Dartmouth and Truro are among those set to close across Canada.
