Changes Coming to Seafood Labelling

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it plans to modernize seafood labelling. The agency says it recently published proposals for labels to include the country of origin for imported whole fish and the fishes’ common names. It says it also plans to explore ways the industry can ensure truthful claims are made on labels. A report released Friday by a coalition of environmental groups says existing rules leave Canadian consumers with less information than those in Europe or the United States.

Memramcook Man Charged in Multi-Million Dollar Theft

A man from Memramcook has been arrested in connection with millions of dollars worth of stolen cargo. 53-year-old Ralph Leblanc turned himself into the RCMP in Shediac on Thursday after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest along with two men from Quebec. The warrants were issued after police raided six locations in Quebec and New Brunswick and recovered more than 3-million-dollars worth of stolen goods. Police say they began tracking the theft ring after a million-dollars worth of Lobster was stolen from a trailer in Grande-Anse last July. Leblanc was transferred into the custody of the Quebec Provincial Police and made his first court appearance on Friday.
