NS foster rate boost

The McNeil Government is increasing the money it pays to foster families.

They will get an additional $1.6 million to help pay the costs of looking after the children in their care.  The daily rate for children up to 9 years old will rise to $19 while the per diem for children 10 and over will go to a little over $27.

Community Services Minister Kelly Regan says the money will be used to increase babysitting rates and per diems paid to families.

Toronto airport strike

If you’re going to or through Toronto by air, beware.

700 ground crew workers at Pearson International are on strike.  They’re employed by Swissport, a company that services 30 airlines including Sunwing; Air Transat, Air France; and British Airways.

The labour dispute could have an impact on some operations but the airport authority says it has a contingency plan.
