Halifax Chronicle Herald expansion panned by some

The owners of the Halifax Chronicle Herald have bought over two dozen of Transcontinental Media’s Atlantic Canadian newspapers.  The new SaltWire Network includes the Kings County Register-Advertiser, the Annapolis Valley Register; the Amherst News and the Citizen-Record.

Meanwhile, striking newsroom staff at the Chronicle Herald who’ve been walking the picket line for over a year are panning the deal.

Union president Ingrid Bulmer says It was told the demise of the Herald was imminent without cuts to wages and other benefits, but believes that was a total fabrication.  The company is not struggling, it’s expanding.  So the union will be filing an unfair labour practise complaint.  It also wants the labour minister to appoint an industrial commission to help settle the strike.
