Newport drug case

A Hants County man has been given a suspended sentence for possession of cocaine.

32 year old Nicholas Peter Northrup was in court Friday where he was found not guilty of drug trafficking but guilty of possession.  The judge gave him a suspended sentence with 18 months probation and a $200 fine.  Northrup was arrested in February of last year in Newport.

Three candidates asked for recounts in their ridings before the deadline to file yesterday.

The NDP’s Denise Peterson-Rafuse wants a recount in Chester-St. Margaret’s which she lost to Liberal Hugh MacKay by 90 votes.  P-C candidate Dan McNaughton was defeated by Liberal Bill Horne in Waverley-Fall River-Beaverbank by 66 votes.  Another Conservative Rob Wolf wants a recount in Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie, which was won by Liberal Lloyd Hines.
