Halifax human rights update

A former navy officer hasn’t ruled out taking his human rights case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Paul Ritchie claims he was discriminated against because he’s gay.  He has lost an appeal of a federal judge’s ruling that refused to overturn a Human Rights Commission decision that he was not discriminated against, although he was treated differently at times at the naval engineering school in Halifax.  The commission said there was no conclusive evidence it was because of his sexual orientation.

Credit concerns

There are more warnings about homeowners taking on too much credit.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says the number of households with a home equity line of credit and a mortgage has increased by nearly 40 per cent since 2011.  It points out the lines of credit may prompt people to borrow more than they can afford and leave them more vulnerable to economic shocks such as a lost job or hike in interest rates.
