Triple murder-suicide in Upper Big Tracadie update

Veterans advocate Peter Stoffer is calling on both provincial and federal gtovernments to hold a public inquiry into the triple murder-suicide in Upper Big Tracadie.

Stoffer says what happened to Lionel Desmond and his family screams for a public inquiry.  He has written letters to the defence minister as well as Premier McNeil pointing out the many system failures that caused Desmond, the Afghan war vet; to react the way he did to his PTSD.

Atlantic Canada solitary rates

According to the Correctional Service of Canada, Atlantic Canada has the highest rate of solitary confinement for federal inmates; at five per cent.

The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners prohibits prolonged solitary confinement, which is anything over two weeks; longer than that is considered torture.

Canada helped draft those rules.

As of last month, 404 prisoners were in solitary, and 22 had been there for more than 100 days.
