Halifax celebrated Canada Day by welcoming 53 new citizens. People from more than 20 countries took the oath of citizenship at the Pier 21 immigration centre on Saturday. Politicians from all three levels of government welcomed the new Canadians. Mayor Mike Savage said the turnout for the annual ceremony was unprecedented.

Maritimers Miss Cut as Canada Names Next Astronauts
A pair of Maritimers narrowly missed the cut to become Canada’s next astronauts. Alex Delorey of Moncton and Michael Anthony Jordan from Halifax had been shortlisted from thousands of applicants to be among the final 17 candidates. However, neither made the final cut when Canada’s two new astronauts were announced during Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa yesterday. With Justin Trudeau on hand – Jennifer Sidey of Calgary and Joshua Kutryk from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta were announced as the next two Canadians who will venture into space
