A new study co-authored by a UNB professor shows eruptions on the sun’s surface not only contribute to the northern lights, but also disrupt radio communication and GPS systems on Earth. Dr. Richard Langley and others found large sections of the Arctic ionosphere were left void of electrons after a solar storm. It could help further explain what causes blackouts in radio and satellite signals in the region, which limits air and marine travel.

NB Power won’t hit earnings goal this year
NB Power’s plan for between $90 million and $100 million in earnings this year won’t happen. CFO Darren Murphy told Brunswick News the goal for the fiscal year end is to stay on the positive side of the ledger. The utility’s third-quarter report had earnings of $44 million to this point, with ice storm recovery costs being significant.
