Fisheries Fund

Ottawa is making a 325 million dollar bet that the Atlantic Canada’s fishing industry has room to grow.

The new Atlantic Fisheries Fund is providing up to 325 million dollars to spur innovation and growth in the fishery, which currently employs about 58-thousand people.

The goal is to open up new markets in Asia and in Europe.

The fund will be used for marketing, as well as to support new ways to harvest and process fish.

Health Funding

Ontario, Quebec and Alberta have reached health-care funding deals with the federal government, leaving Manitoba now as the only holdout.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls the agreements a victory for federalism and for Canadians.

At a meeting in December, provinces and territories rejected a federal offer that included targeted money for home care and mental health.

Since then nearly every jurisdiction has signed its own deal that includes those targeted funds.
