Longhouse set up in Fredericton

A temporary longhouse has been set up near the legislature in Fredericton.

Elder Alma Brooks says it’s a place of teaching, not protest. Brooks with the Wolastoq Grand Council says the longhouse was erected just ahead of Canada Day to educate people that indigenous people were here long before Europeans arrived and confederation. Brooks added she also¬† understands the position of an indigenous senator, Sandra Lovelace Nicholas, who says she won’t celebrate Canada Day until all treaties are settled, and all First Nations children enjoy equality.
