Low Point ferry incident

A Marine Atlantic ferry that got stuck in the ice yesterday was finally freed around 8:00 yesterday evening.

The MV Highlanders, with 209 passengers aboard was trapped about 300 metres off Low Point.  Marine Atlantic says the winds the past few days have pushed ice in close to shore, hampering their operations.  The Blue Putees was on its way to free the Highlanders when it had to shut down its engines because of clogged ice as well, but finally made it into the terminal.

Holy Angels Convent project

Province taxpayers are putting up $3.2 million to help turn the former Holy Angels Convent into an arts and culture centre.

Premier Stephen McNeil says the renovations will transform the convent building into a hub for culture and innovation.  He said what’s been missing is a hub, an incubation centre for artisans and performers.

New Dawn Centre is putting up a million dollars for the work which will maintain the exterior appearance of the 130 year old building and provide a new interior.
