Crown appeals dismissal of manslaughter charges against police officers

The Crown is appealing a judge’s decision which threw out manslaughter charges against two Bathurst police officers.

The Crown says the judge made a jurisdictional error when she tossed out all charges against Constables Patrick Bulger and Matthieu Boudreau at a preliminary hearing. They were charged with killing Tracadie businessman Michel Vienneau at the Bathurst train station in 2015.

Vienneau’s partner has also launched a civil lawsuit claiming police negligence.

Former First Nations Chief freed on bail while appealing

A former chief of the Esgenoopetit First Nation, Wilbur Dedam, has been released from prison as he appeals his conviction on sex charges.

Dedam was sentenced to 9 years in prison after a jury found him guilty on charges of sexually assaulting three girls in the ’70s and ’80’s in the community. He was released on strict conditions and will live at his home.
