Saint John “basket-brawl” during an anti-bullying theme night

A brawl during a basketball game at Saint John Harbour Station last week has resulted in 52 games worth of player suspensions and 13-thousand-dollars in fines.

The brawl between the Saint John Riptide and the Kitchener Waterloo Titans took place during an anti-bullying night theme at Harbour station on Thursday.

The Nationl Basketball League says that nine members of the Saint John squad have been handed a combined 29 games in suspensions and fines totalling 75-hundred-dollars.

In order for the teams to dress enough players for upcoming games, the league ruled that each team will serve the suspensions three players at a time.

Valley rescue

First responders were doing ice rescue training in Brooklyn Saturday when they got a call from a woman who said she was in trouble at Smiley’s Provincial Park, then the phone went dead.

They jumped in their trucks and headed out right away finding the woman had gone through the ice on the Meander River while trying to rescue her dogs which had gone in the water.  She managed to get to shore but she couldn’t walk.  She was treated for minor hypothermia and taken to Hants Community Hospital.

Rescue workers are warning people about the dangers of going out on the ice especially in light of the warm weather we’ve had recently.
