WW I Soldier

The remains of a St. Stephen, New Brunswick, man who died while fighting in France have been identified and he’s to be given a proper military burial.

Sergeant Harold Wilfred Shaughnessy was found near the village of Vendin-le-Vieil _ at the site where the battle for Hill 70 took place in August 1917.

He was identified using historical records, an identifying disc and D-N-A tests.

Born in 1884 in St. Stephen, Shaughnessy’s name is on a war memorial in the community.

Galavanting Gallant

New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant is on a week-long series of meetings outside the province that started with a get together with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau yesterday.

The premier moves onto Toronto for the Southeastern United States-Canadian Provinces Alliance meetings on June 4th to June 6th.

He then heads to Washington for the Council of the Federation mission from June 6th to June 8th.

The premier says in a news release that softwood lumber will be a key issue during those meetings because the industry contributes more than 1.45 billion dollars a year to New Brunswick’s economy and employs more than 22-thousand people.
