A young Beluga whale rescued from a river in Northern New Brunswick last month is feared dead. The research team tracking the animal tells the CBC that they stopped receiving transmissions from the Belgua’s satellite tag last Tuesday. The tag attached to the whale’s flank should have been sending a signal showing the Beluga’s location every time it breached the surface for air. Researchers hope the satellite tag may have broken off or somehow been damaged but admit it’s likely to have stopped transmitting if the animal died and either sunk to the bottom or was floating belly up.
