NS budget

The budget tabled yesterday shows a surplus of almost $26 million .

The McNeil Government’s spending plan shows an average $160 tax cut for people earning between $25,000 and $75,000, about half the taxpayers in the province.  60,000 poorer Nova Scotians will no longer pay provincial income tax.

Tory leader Jamie Baillie says the budget was basically damage control about all the mistakes they made in the last 3½ years, pointing out funding for the film industry which is about the same now as it was before the film tax credit was cut.

NDP Leader Gary Burrill said the fact they’re putting more money toward food and recreation in long-term care homes suggests the government saw a problem with the previous funding levels.
