Some homes abandoned after floods to be torn down

They’ll begin tearing down 18 derelict homes in the flood zone next month.

The announcement yesterday came a day after a fire in one of the damaged buildings on St. Peter’s Road wich is considered suspicious. The damaged buildings have been a target for vandals and fire bugs.

Residents have been increasingly concerned fires could spread to still occupied homes.

Municipal Affairs Minister Derek Mombourquette confirmed yesterday the houses will start coming down next month and the process should be done by early in the fall. He said the families have agreed to their disaster relief payments.
