Membertou and Eskasoni First Nations campground

The former Englishtown Ridge Campground has new owners, a group of friends from Membertou and Eskasoni First Nations.  It is now known as the Kluskap Ridge RV and Campground.

The CBC reports the six friends were sitting around a picnic table talking about how hard it was to find campsites where they could park their trailers together and joked about owning their own campground.  Now it’s reality.

They bought the campground with financial help from Ulnooweg Development Group, which provides loans to Indigenous entrepreneurs.  Besides 49 hookup sites and 30 tent sites they will also offer two teepees, a cabin and two vacation rentals.

New helicopters for NS firefighters

Last August, firefighters with Natural Resources battled a forest fire for 10 days near Kejimkujik National Park.

Now, Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources will face the 2017 forest fire season with some brand new equipment.

One of four new  4 million dollar H-125 Airbus helicopters arrived in February and a second one was scheduled to land in Shubenacadie.

The third helicopter is expected this summer with the final one arriving in 2018.

The new helicopters will be able to stay in the air longer than the current fleet, and they will also be able to carry three times more water.
