Fisherman Compensated for Maritime Link Disruption
Cape Breton Crab and lobster fishermen affected by the installation of the Maritime Link will receive compensation. Emera, Nova Scotia Powers parent company, has agreed to compensate a group of 60 fishermen affected by the closure of fishing grounds during the installation. The laying of 170 kilometer long cables linking Point Aconi, Cape Breton to Newfoundland required a large swath of ocean floor to be declared off limits to fishermen. The terms of the compensation deal have not been released. The Maritime Link project, expected to be completed in December, will bring electricity from Newfoundland’s Muskrat Falls Hydro project to Nova Scotia.
