Changes in discrimination laws

The province has introduced changes to the Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on family status and gender identity or expression.

The government says the changes will modernize the act, update the language and address inequalities in protections and defences.  It says everyone has a right to be free from discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, services, signs and professional, business or trade associations. Another amendment will modernize the definition of mental disability.

Tories want appeal extension on property assessments

The Conservatives continue to call on the government to extend the deadline for filing an appeal of property assessments.

Blaine Higgs says many people may not realize the government has admitted there were mistakes in thousands of assessment bills. Some people were looking at double digit increases even though there’d been little or no work done to their properties.

So far, the government says over 3,400 New Brunswickers have already appealed. There are two weeks left before the deadline of March 31st.
