Councillors approve growth strategy

Common Council approved a growth plan for the city at its meeting yesterday, but released few details. We should know more later today.

The presentation just said there are six basic strategies which will be handled by a staffer hired to oversee its implementation.

The Roadmap for Smart Growth plan is designed to increase the city’s population, tax base, and create jobs. It was approved by a 7-2 vote with Councillors Greg Norton and Gary Sullivan opposed. They said lowering property tax and water rates should be part of the strategy.

Second reactor for Pt. Lepreau?

NB Power CEO Gaetan Thomas has been discussing a possible second nuclear reactor at Point Lepreau in various meetings…but there’s nothing imminent.

Thomas told the Telegraph-Journal the premier is favourable to the idea. However, right now, there’s not a business argument that would make the project happen now…but options are being considered.
