No cause yet for latest apartment fire

There’s no word yet on the cause of anoher uptown apartment fire early yesterday morning.

The call came in around 1:30 to a building on Princess Street which was heavily involved by the time fire fighters arrived. Residents of neighbouring apartment buildings were evacuated for awhile and then allowed back in once the flames were down.

The resident of the apartment where the fire started was not home at the time. One fire fighter suffered minor injuries, was treated then returned to the fire scene.

Fire chief wants more say on disaster plans

The fire chief is pushing for development of a centralized emergency management plan in case of a major disaster.

Chief Kevin Clifford told CBC Saint John has the country’s largest oil refinery, a liquified natural gas terminal, natural gas pipelines, trains carrying dangerous cargos…but no central emergency management plan. Clifford, who is also head of the local E-M-O, wants to approach local industry bosses to put together plans in case of a disaster and he wants the fire department to have a larger role in developing those plans. He says it’s not about finding fault it’s about moving forward.
