Cruise ship season opens this week

The first cruise ship of the season will arrive tomorrow. The Veendam will open the season putting as many as 1,200 passengers on the docks at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal at 8:00am. It’ll leave at 5:00 afteer they have spent thousands of dollars in the shops and restaurants.

The port is expecting 64 cruise ship calls this season with over 144,000 passengers. The busiest part of the season will be in the fall.

RCMP trial

An RCMP superintendent was the first to testify at the force’s trial on Canada Labour Code violations yesterday in Moncton.

Bruce Stuart is in charge of rapid response training for the force and helped develop its Immediate Action Rapid Deployment policy. Stuart told the court research shows carbines are superior to shotguns in active emergency response. He also testified research into the use of the rifles and body armour was shelved because of the controversy over the Tasering death of a man in Vancouver several years ago.
