Windsor’s Deputy Mayor Laurie Murley, has been named president of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities.
She told the Kings County News that as president, she will lead ensure that the board engages with members; and will bring members’ concerns to the province.
Murley will also represent them through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
A Senate report recommends extending the Energy East Pipeline through to the Strait of Canso instead of stopping in Saint John where an export terminal is planned.
The Chronicle Herald reports the Senate’s Transport and Communications Committee recommends the National Energy Board examine Point Tupper as the end point.
TransCanada Corp, which is building the pipeline; says it’s not interested.
Two Nova Scotia senators on the committee say you cannot ship heavy oil out of the east coast without going through Nova Scotia waters so that province should share in the benefits because of the risk.
They also say it would alleviate heavy tanker traffic in the ecologically sensitive Bay of Fundy.
