About 200 brave people took the annual Polar bear Dip at Mispec Beach yesterday morning. The Telegraph-Journal reports young and old alike took off their parkas, stripped down to bathing suits, and ran into the water to the cheers of onlookers. Then raced right back out and grabbed towels, most with big grins on their faces.

Polar bears
The polar bears jumped in the water in Dorchester yesterday to start their New Year off in style.
47 jumpers took the plunge at the Lions’ club annual dip. Organizer Warren Folkins told the Times and Transcript the conditions couldn’t been any better with temperatures just above freezing and not a lot of wind. As one jumper from Newfoundland said, it was like summer weather in Newfoundland as he stripped down to shorts, a t-shirt and sou’wester.
The dippers all paid a $25 fee which will go to the volunteer fire department.
