NS dietary review

Community Services Minister Joanne Bernard says everything is on the table as her department reviews social assistance.

Her comments came after a judge sent a complaint about the amount given to recipients for special health related diets.

Bernard says her department spends $8.8 million a year on paying for special diets, but the program hasn’t been revamped since 2001.

Atlantic immigration rates

A record number of immigrants came to Atlantic Canada in the first nine months of last year, in part because of the Syrian refugees; but the problem is many immigrants don’t stay.

A report from APEC shows 11,600 immigrants arrived in the four Atlantic provinces because of expanded provincial nominee programs.

But author David Chaundy says retention rates are low and processing times are too long.
