Cash for Eskasoni

Eskasoni is getting almost $100,000 from ACOA for an interpretive program which the band hopes is another step toward making tourism an important part of the First Nation’s economy.

The funding will go toward Eskasoni Cultural Journeys, a two-kilometre trail circling Goat Island at the entrance to the community on Bras d’Or Lake.  It’ll include interpretive panels and stations where people sing, dance and make baskets.  The money will be used to add canoes, a performance space and more interpretive materials to the program.

CBU strike possible

Cape Breton University could be strikebound before the end of the month.

The Faculty Association has set January 23rd as its strike date.  The association’s executive has given much more than the required 48 hours notice.  Association spokesman Andrew Reynolds in a news release said the main issue in dispute is the layoff clause, but the strike notice is also a referendum on the management of CBU.  He said the university is being steered towards the rocks and will soon run aground.
