Workers compensation in NS

A group fighting for injured workers wants an independent inquiry into the workers compensation system.

The Pictou County Injured Workers Association told a legislature committee the system needs an overhaul.  Mary Lloyd says the system is geared toward keeping down costs for a small number of large employers that account for most workplace injuries.

Her group called for such an inquiry in 2012 but it was rejected by the then NDP government as too costly and complex.

Apple Blossom Festival fight

Kentville Mayor Sandra Snow has taken off the gloves to fight the Apple Blossom Festival Board’s decision to move the parade to new Minas.

Snow told the Kings County register there’s been a duplicitous and malicious effort by the board against her town despite attempts by Kentville to amend agreements on support for the festival. The town is still waiting for a response from the Festival Board to its latest offer.

Snow says the Festival Board has also indicated it wants to move the children’s parade, street dance and fireworks to other communities.
