Tensions could be high as a protest calling for a statue of Edward Cornwallis to be toppled is scheduled for today. The event called ‘Removing Cornwallis’ was advertised on Facebook with hundreds of people pledging to to take part in the protest against Halifax’s controversial historic founder. Cornwallis founded Halifax in 1749 and later issued a bounty on Mi’kmaq scalps. Halifax police say they will be monitoring the event.

Five ‘Legacy Rooms’ Announced for Halifax
Five Halifax venues are taking up Tragically Hip rocker Gord Downie’s call for Canadians to do more to promote dialogue and reconciliation with Aboriginal people. The Legacy Room initiative, part of the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund, announced new locations yesterday. They include a Halifax private school, a university, an accounting outlet, a restaurant and a development firm. Charlene Bearhead, co-chairwoman of the fund, says the rooms are for conversations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and raise awareness of the legacy of residential schools.
