Justin Trudeau became the first prime minister to participate in the Halifax Pride parade this weekend, but he hopes he won’t be the last. Thousands of people turned out to cheer on Trudeau, who was accompanied by his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, as the procession snaked its way through downtown Halifax. Trudeau told reporters on Friday that he longs for a day when the participation of prime ministers in Pride events won’t be so novel. The Halifax Pride Festival runs through July 30th.

Lockdown Ends at Springhill Prison
A lockdown at the Springhill Institution has been lifted. The prison was placed in lockdown on Monday after a pair of correctional officers were assaulted. The incident had forced prisoners to remain in their cells all week and visitors were also barred from the institution. Correctional Service Canada says 19 inmates were involved in the incident. One inmate was treated in hospital before returning to the prison. The correctional officers who were assaulted suffered only minor injuries.
