NS tire protest

A protest was held yesterday over the burning of tires at the Canada LaFarge cement plant in Brookfield.

The group gathered in Truro over the plan to burn the rubber tires.  Lydia Sorflaten of Citizens Against Burning of Tires is concerned the burning could have adverse effects on people’s health and the environment.

Others are also concerned that burning the tires will leave fewer for C&D recycling which turns them into material used in asphalt.

NS foster rate boost

The McNeil Government is increasing the money it pays to foster families.

They will get an additional $1.6 million to help pay the costs of looking after the children in their care.  The daily rate for children up to 9 years old will rise to $19 while the per diem for children 10 and over will go to a little over $27.

Community Services Minister Kelly Regan says the money will be used to increase babysitting rates and per diems paid to families.
