LaHave River cleanup

The three levels of government have pledged over $15 million for the cleanup of the LaHave River.

The money will go mainly to helping homeowners along the river to install septic systems because right now there are about 600 pipes dumping raw sewage straight into the water.

THe cleanup is in large part thanks to a 13 year old girl.  Stella Bowes was told in 2015 she couldn’t go swimming in the river because it was too dirty.  Bowes, as a school science project, began testing the water for contamination and posting the results on Facebook.  That caught the attention of the municipal politicians who got to work on fixing the problem.

NS education

An interim report says neither students with special needs nor their peers are being well-served by the “inclusive” education system.

The commission says there is widespread support for inclusive education, but the current model mostly just isn’t working.  Schools lack a cohesive system for implementing inclusive education.  There’s a lack of funding, teacher training and specialized staff as challenges.

The commission is working on a single provincial policy that will ensure fairness and equity for all students and will hold public hearings in the fall.
