Shelburne fish farm case

The owners of a troubled fish farm in Shelburne were criticized by Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell yesterday.  He also defended his department saying staff were not hiding anything about a massive fish kill in the pens.

At first it was reported as possible fish escapes, then Cooke Aquaculture said it experienced a higher than expected mortality rate because of a storm.

Colwell said his department initially didn’t realize how many fish died as there are always some deaths at aquaculture sites.  He said vets were examining the site and wanted top wait for test results before going public with it.

Digby clear-cutting concerns

Digby Warden Jimmy MacAlpine was looking for your opinion about concerns regarding clear-cutting forestry-methods in the county.

A regional meeting of the municipalities will take place today, at which those concerns will be aired.

MacAlpine also encourages you to bring any concerns to Clare-Digby MLA Gordon Wilson, since crown land forestry is a provincial issue.
