Doctors in Cape Breton held a press conference on Friday to bring attention to the exodus of skilled physicians and medical specialists leaving the island. The public warning came after news on Friday that seven more doctors will be leaving Cape Breton by the end of June. The group of seven doctors holding the press conference were critical of the provincial health authority’s ability to stop the bleeding and recruit specialists to work in Cape Breton.

Women’s Groups to be Heard at Appeal of Cab Driver’s Acquittal
Two women’s groups have been granted intervenor status in the appeal of taxi driver’s acquittal on sexual assault charges. The Nova Scotia Supreme Court says it will hear from Avalon Sexual Assault Centre and the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund when it hears the appeal of Bassam Al-Rawi’s acquittal. Al-Rawi was found with a partially naked passed out women in his taxi but a judge found Al Rawi not guilty of sexual assault earlier this year. The acquittal sparked a national outcry. The Crown appealed the decision and the case will be heard by the Supreme Court this November.
