Harsh criticism of guards in prison inmate’s death

A correctional investigator has slammed the Dorchester Pen over the 2015 death of a Sydney man who was an inmate.

Ivan Zinger’s report says unnecessary and inappropriate physical and chemical force was used against Matthew Hines. It was also critical of misleading information being given to the family about his death initially.

Hines died shortly after being beaten and pepper sprayed by guards.  The Correctional Service has accepted recommendations in the report and offered an apology to the family.
