George D. Lewis School update

There’s some progress in efforts to keep the George D. Lewis School in Louisbourg open.

Education Minister Karen Casey has proposed funding a pilot project to turn some of the unused space at the school over for outside institutions and businesses.  George D. Lewis is one of the schools the school board decided to close because of declining enrollments.

Brett Hanham, vice-chair of the newly formed George D. Lewis Gateways to Opportunity Society, told CBC the idea is to rent out space in the building and students would in turn learn from those tenants.  Municipal staff would also move into the building.
