PotashCorp may continue salt operations

PotashCorp is mulling over possibly continuing to cut salt for icy New Brunswick roads beyond this winter.

Officials say they are looking into possible options to find out if it may be viable to mine salt, even after its contract to Cargill in Penobsquis, which buys and stores the road salt; expires.

Cargill’s deal with the province’s DOT, also runs out at the end of April; PotashCorp’s original plan was to suspend salt mining at that time.

About 150,000 metric tons of salt is required for the provincial highway network every winter.
