Province will Honour Substitute Teacher Benefits

The provincial government changed its tune of Friday and agreed to protect benefits for substitute teachers. Under the current collective agreement the one day walkout by teachers yesterday would have caused long-term substitute teachers to lose their accrued benefits if service was interrupted and the the government had said it would uphold the clause. On Friday, Education Minister Karen Casey reversed that decision. It’s expected Bill 75 which will impose a new contract on the province’s 9300 teachers will pass the legislature early next week.
