City appeals class-action lawsuit certification

The city is appealing the Certification of a class-actiopn  lawsuit against Saint John by victims of Kenneth Estabrooks.

He’s the former police officer convicted of sexual abusing youths. Estabrooks is dead now…but as many as 300 people are suing the city for damages.  He admitted to his superiors on the police force in 1975 that he sexually abused at least two boys. He wasn’t charged with anything…but instead was transferred to the city work’s department until he retired in 1983.

John McKiggan, representing Robert Hayes, the lead victim in the classd-action called the city’s decision to appeal the certification as disappointing but not surprising.
