Legal Aid won’t pay for expensive lawyer in murder retrial

A man facing a retrial on murder charges won’t be able to have a Quebec lawyer represent him because Legal Aid won’t pay the difference in fees.

Leslie Greenwood is facing a second trial in the killings of Barry Kirk Mersereau and Nancy Paula Christensen in their Burlington home in 2000, which was linked to the Hell’s Angels. A judge has now turned down a request from Greenwood to have legal aid pay for the more expensive lawyer who represented him in a murder trial in Montreal last year.

Greenwood will be back in court in January to see if he’s hired a new lawyer.
