Candina Doucette is going present her original research on slavery in Digby and Annapolis counties at a university conference in Brandon, Manitoba.
She told the Annapolis County Spectator that the fact that Digby County had slavery is lost on many people, because that piece of history was not taught in school.
After having two kids, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts at Acadia majoring in history.
During her research, she also discovered Canadian black soldiers weren’t allowed to bear arms because it was thought they wouldn’t just shoot Germans, but any white soldier.
